RESPONSE ABILITY is a “reality”-style educational video program that brings viewers to understand how group dynamics can prevent people from taking action to stop dangerous or unhealthy behaviors And, it demonstrates skills to successfully intervene when they witness hazing or other dangerous or unhealthy behaviors. While there are all kinds of problematic behaviors with bystanders, this program is out to impact...
Hazing
Drug/Alcohol Abuse
Sexual Abuse/Assault
Eating Disorders
Anti-Semitism
Homophobia
Racism
Sexism
...and more!
In fact, by focusing on bystander behavior and delving into what makes us tick when we’re part of a group, this educational program becomes less a “prevention” video and more of a “personal development” tool. Moving towards the eradication of hazing just happens to be a very pleasant byproduct of helping Greek men and women develop positive group behavior and skills.
THE MESSAGE is to believe in yourself - have enough self-confidence and healthy self-esteem that you are willing to stand up for what you know to be right. Your moral compass is so well developed that you are not tempted to second-guess yourself. Your principles and your feelings about a situation are most likely shared by others in the group.
THE AUDIENCE The primary audience is the college student, with an emphasis on the fraternity and sorority community. The secondary audience is everyone else. Parents and families of collegians, as well as campus professionals and other campus life staff, will be impacted from this message.
THE APPROACH We gathered a group of collegians from around the country, spent a month with them all together on Facebook, and brought them all to a “retreat house” in Sedona, Arizona, where they all agreed to participate in an exercise to explore issues of bystander behavior. The whole retreat weekend, as well as glimpses into the month on Facebook, was captured on multiple cameras and is shared with the audience in a reality-style format.
We have skillfully blended key excerpts from the dialogue into two compelling videos that convey the desired message and demonstrate successful intervention techniques. The resulting videos have, in appearance and feel, documented a real event - unscripted and raw. We are committed that each and every viewer is left empowered to act - to transform their values into action.
WHAT VIEWERS ARE SAYING...
“I thought the video was very well done! The focus on motivating viewers to take a values-oriented approach that is
antidote to remaining a bystander was handled in a direct but not “preachy” manner. The concept worked, especially
since it models the reality TV format. The video was constructed in a very contemporary, easily-viewable format. Good balance between participant/expert talk and clips from popular culture. The training video was outstanding!”
Tracy Davis, Ph.D. -- Educational and Interdisciplinary Studies, Western Illinois University
“I’ve started using this video with individual chapters and have had an overwhelming response to it. I have had some
AMAZING conversations with students and hear over and over again how everyone should see it. I have been truly amazed by the positive reaction the students have had to this and look forward to incorporating it more on our campus.”
Kate Planow -- Assoc. Dir. of Fraternity/Sorority LIfe, Longwood University
“Thank you for taking the risk to create and produce such a ground-breaking educational programming method. As a
veteran student affairs professional turned fraternity executive, I can safely say that this project is one that has created
a healthy impact on our students.”
Brian Tenclinger -- Executive Director, Triangle Fraternity -- Former Asst Dean of Students
“WOW! This is the first word that comes to mind about the RESPONSE ABILITY project. We’ve been able to adapt
the training to fit large and small group workshops in formal and informal settings. I am thrilled with the end product!”
